1) Berkshire Hathaway
2) Johnson & Johnson
3) Google
4) 3M Company
5) SC Johnson
6) Intel Corporation
7) Microsoft
8) The Coca-Cola Company
9) amazon.com
10) General Mills

General Mills a ‘top 10’ company in U.S. reputation survey
7 April 2010

For the eighth straight year, General Mills was named one of the top 10 best-regarded companies in the U.S., according to the 2009 Harris Interactive Reputation Quotient Survey.

General Mills ranked No. 10 in the survey that measures the reputations of the 60 most visible companies in the U.S. – down from No. 8 last year. We were the only food company to make the list.
The drop in position was due primarily to three newcomers making the top 10 list: Berkshire Hathaway (which vaulted from No. 11 last year to No. 1), Intel and SC Johnson. Our scores remained relatively constant – 79.46 in 2009 vs. 79.65 in 2008.
The Harris study is one of two surveys the company follows; the other is conducted by the Reputation Institute. The surveys are important because there are many benefits for being recognized for having a good corporate reputation, including greater customer preference; increased stakeholder support in times of controversy; higher market and stock prices; and more success in landing and retaining top recruits.

“In addition to the slightly more positive reputation environment, we see a very different overall view of how companies are being evaluated and perceived this year,” said Robert Fronk, senior vice president at Harris Interactive. “In last year’s study we saw companies that provided value and a sense of comfort getting strong overall reputation ratings. This year, we see overall corporate governance, performance and leadership driving positive reputation perceptions.”

The top 10 companies on this year’s list include:
1) Berkshire Hathaway
2) Johnson & Johnson
3) Google
4) 3M Company
5) SC Johnson
6) Intel Corporation
7) Microsoft
8) The Coca-Cola Company
9) amazon.com
10) General Mills
Kraft’s decline to No. 13 this year – from No. 5 last year – gives General Mills the distinction of being the only food company on the top 10 list.

The annual Harris Interactive RQ surveys more than 29,000 Americans. Companies are evaluated on six different reputation dimensions: emotional appeal, products and services, social responsibility, vision and leadership, workplace environment, and financial performance.
The recognition follows many other honors given to General Mills in the past year, including “World’s 50 Most Admired Companies,” Fortune magazine; “100 Best Places to Work For,” Fortune magazine; “Global Top Companies for Leaders,” Fortune magazine; “100 Best Corporate Citizens,” Corporate Responsibility magazine; “100 Best Companies for Working Mothers,” Working Mother magazine; “40 Best Companies for Diversity,” Black Enterprise magazine, and many others.
